Fifth Doctor II. by ilwin Fifth Doctor II. by ilwin
Finished today. Well, yesterday... Well, yesterday the main whole part, today - it's 1:29 am - the hat. (TMI yes, you can forget it right now ;D)
I'm really excited how he turned out. The hat included. I can hardly believe it I managed to do it like this. YAAAAYYYY! :D
Hat and the coat are removable. Just for the order :)
And I should go try to fall asleep now :)

Great work all around, but honestly, the little crochet celery stalk is what does it for me. And, for some reason, how well his hairstyle translates.

Well, it ended up bit bigger - the celery - than it should be but I was too lazy to try again :). But doesn't look totally wrong so I left it like this and sewed on. Yeah, these are the small details that make it somehow complete :). I always try to make as many such details as possible :). And Five just have to have his celery, haven't he? :)
Not quite sure what exactly do you mean with the hair but anyway - hair is big part of it, I found out that very quickly; hair can almost completely ruin the look of the ami or totally complete it. And I'm still learning and battling every time I do hair. And I'm twice happy when right the hair comes out well, like this one... :)
Oh, TMI roght? Sorry, I'm already quiet :)

I'm not sure how to phrase it - I mean his hairstyle looks pretty much exactly right, which is impressive to me since it's done with yarn. I know some of the other Doctors have hairstyles that are harder to do in this medium. I'm finding them hard enough to draw, let alone recreate in 3D.

Yes, I see now what you meant. I was hesitating for long if I should force trying to make them from single fibers of yarn or try it with embroidery. He's got just the lenght of hair that's hard to do in the size of this pattern with yarn. Especially with yarn I have at hand (concerning both thickness and colour). And embroidery works good especially for short hair. Like... shorter, so I didn't want to make it with it. But when I tried to make few single fibers it just affirmed that it's too short for this because that yarn in this length would be too outstanding making him look like an angry mop.
So I went for embroidery sure that it won't look very good but at least not catastrophic but as it showed up I've managed to make it look like well. Even more than just well. Quite true  (although this picture(s) don't show the hair very much)

May I ask which Doctor you think has hair harder to made in yarn? :)

I think the 10th probably has the hardest hairstyle to do in yarn, because it's supposed to stick up at odd angles all the time. If the yarn just flops over it won't look the same.

4 and 6 have been the hardest for me to draw, because of all the curls, but I'd imagine that being easier in yarn, since you can stitch it into loops.

I was curious what you'll say :). Yeah, it's like you say. Curls like Four has are quite easily doable with loops (time-consuming and boring work but yeah, technically quite easy; if I expressed it well), Ten's are harder. Fortunetly I didn't need to solve this, the very original pattern Martian Boy is in fact Tenth Doctor :) - did you see it somewhere? Here is the original one by creator of the pattern - [link] - and here is mine (well, the very first one, I've already made lots of them now, but it seems to me every other one has worse hair than the previous, although it looks quite better during process and then just bum! lost nad spoiled %). Oh, and never mind that Rose, please, ok? Too many mistakes on her :) ) - [link]
Don't know if the hair is entirely true but close enough I think :). But I'm glad I didn't need to think this out because I probably wouldn't find out something like this. (so at the end it wasn't hard for me because I've already had the pattern and much harder was fgiure out how to make Five's or Three's hair :) )

No, I haven't seen any crocheted Tenth Doctors yet, thanks for the links. =D I think it turned out pretty well - the length and cut is there, it just needs a bit of styling.

Haha, no I don't do anything else with the hair, neither I won't try :). (well I couldn't think of anything I could try to trim the hair little more :) either).
There also some of the other Tenth Doctors (not really all of them probably but most surely) and also other new who characters I've ever made on that my livejournal, if you'd like to see them and didn't browsed there a bit already :).
